The Death of Lazarus: John 11
This story starts off with an ill man. Lazarus of Bethany, the brother of Mary and Martha is very ill. When Mary goes to the Lord to tell Him that her brother is very ill, Jesus responds that “ The illness does not lead to death, It is for the glory of God, so that the son of God may be glorified through it” (verse 4). From the beginning of the story we see that Jesus rebukes any sense of death, reminding us of his control over it and that He can turn dead dreams back to life.
When Jesus learns of Lazarus’s illness He travels to Bethany, the home of Mary and Martha. Jesus finds that Lazarus has already been in the tomb for four days upon arrival. Scholars claim that the Jews believed that the soul hovered over the body for three days, hoping to reenter it, but then gave up and departed afterwards. Based on Jewish beliefs and traditions, the only way for Lazarus to come back to life after four days of being dead was through supernatural powers.
Jesus Can Work Suddenly
When Martha sees Jesus she says, “ If you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you” (verse 21). Martha is well aware that death does not exist in the midst of God and that God has the power to overturn all things and turn dead dreams back to life. Now comes the time for Jesus’ Miracle. Jesus goes to Lazarus’ tomb and says “ Lazarus, come out” (verse 43) and the man comes out. Jesus is able to resurrect Lazarus with only three words. With three words Jesus changes the mood of everyone in his midst; He changes the life of a man and his family.
God’s Resurrecting Power in Your Life
Call to Salvation
The death of Lazarus is a reminder of the resurrecting power of Christ. The Lord has the power to turn your dead dreams alive; he has the power to refresh, renew, and resurrect you. When we believe in Christ as our Lord and savior and give Him access into our lives as Martha did, it allows him to transform our being. You may be thinking that you are too “dead” to give your life to Christ, but the truth is that the Lord is greater than any dead thing. Jesus Christ has the ability to resurrect you from your dead life and transform you from the inside out. The only thing that God asks from you today is to surrender your life and allow him to use His transformative power.
—-Read ” To Dirty and Broken”
You may have already given your life to Christ, but do you understand that the Lord’s resurrecting power continues past salvation? Maybe last year was not a good year for you; your resolutions and dreams never came to pass. Are you entering this New Year with those old dreams or did you leave them behind? Have you lost hope? You must have the faith that Mary and Martha had; faith in the transformative power of Jesus Christ.
Those dreams and passions that God has placed in your heart, no matter how dormant or dead they may seem, are not truly dead. The almighty God has “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11) and all these plans shall come to fruition.
Standards of God vs. Standards of Man
Consequently, knowing that God only has good plans that will come to pass helps keep hope alive. As you stay in God’s will, He will do right by you; He will make your dreams come true when the time is right. It is very easy to lose hope on plans that you have had for a long time; maybe you wanted to get married, finish school or open a business. Whatever plan you have tucked away in you heart, understand that even on the fourth day of Lazarus’ stay in the tomb, Jesus Christ was able to resurrect him.
Your dreams and plans may be very far from you in the natural world, it may seem that it will not happen base on earthly standards, but fear not for we serve a supernatural God. We are in the world but not of the world; you don’t live by the standards of man but the standards of God, the King of kings.
Speaking Life And Not Death
We keep our mind on God so that we may achieve the supernatural. God has granted us many tools, one of them being the tongue.“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit” (Proverbs 18:21). You have a choice on how you use your tongue; choose to use it for good. Speak life unto your dreams and passions. Don’t let fear, anxiety and hopelessness stop you from believing in the resurrecting power of Christ. He will turn dead dreams back to life. God has the ability to turn absolutely anything around. Your ” dead ” past can be washed away, and you can be renewed. Dreams that have been dormant for years will not be dead forever.
As you start a new chapter, I pray that you will continue to keep your dreams close to your heart and keep hope alive. God hasn’t forgotten about you or any unfulfilled wishes “ For the Lord will not cast off his people, nor will he forsake his inheritance” (Psalm 94:14). Continue to seek the Lord and hold on to those things that seem dead for they will surely come alive.
