Mark Twain once said that “ the two most important days in your life are the day you were born, and the day you find out why”. What is your purpose on this earth, why were you created, were you even created on purpose or was it just a mishap?
God knows exactly who you are meant to be, “ Before I formed you in the womb I knew you before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations” (Jeremiah 1:5). You were not a mistake, but a creation made by God, he knew of your existence before the beginning of time.
A Manufacturer’s Product
You might be saying, “ ok I know that God knew me before creating me, but what does that mean in terms of having a purpose and being called?”. If God knew that you would be born then he had a plan set for your life. A manufacturer does not create a product before deciding the purpose of the product. When creating
a product, you first set out the blueprint, the audience it will target, the purpose of the product, and then you make it. If anyone has been created on this earth, that means God, the manufacturer of mankind, has a purpose for them.
The issue is not that you don’t have a purpose, no, you have been called. The issue is that often times, through sin, we stray far away from our manufacturer and are unable to determine our calling and purpose. Sometimes products get so bruised up and beaten over time that you are unable to recognize what it was meant to be; we’ve all had that destroyed book, that you can no longer tell the title of. We live in a fallen world and the problems of life have a way of beating us up too, sometimes to a point where we move so off track that we become unrecognizable.
Have you ever bought an item, and instead of reading the assembly manual that comes with the item, you assemble it based on your own knowledge? I do this all the time. Eventually, what happens is that you end up building the item, let us say that it is a bookshelf. The bookshelf looks nice at first glance, yet there are some bolts you forget to secure and it is not level, so it ends up falling apart after a short amount of time. This is what happens when we mature apart from the Word, we may look like we have it together on the outside, but inside we are crumbling and eventually will break.
Living In Intimacy with God
We were not meant to live apart from our manufacturer and apart from his manual, the Word. “ If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die we belong to the Lord” (Romans 14:8). Sin is what separates us from God “ But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you so that he will not hear” (Isaiah 59:2). Our sinful nature separates us from God, but the blood of the lamb covers all sin and allows us to live intimately with God. The question we should be asking ourselves is “ am I walking with God or am I living apart from him” because if you live apart from God you will NEVER know the call upon your life.
You are a child of God made on purpose, for a purpose. “ Then God said “ Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of heaven and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth” ( Genesis 1:26). You were made after the likeness of God, not to sit around but to have dominion over the earth. You were made to have success over everything you touch because your heavenly father formed you.
“ So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” ( 1 Corinthians 10:31). You have a calling over your life, and everything you do should have purpose. You might not be at the point where you are sure about your calling but you still have the ability to ask God about the purpose of different aspects of your life. God cares even about the little things. I often ask him, what is the purpose of dressing in this way, what is the purpose of this class? What is the purpose of this friendship? If you want to be a powerhouse for the Lord, you must live a life that is purposeful.
It is only through intimacy with your creator, that you will be able to determine your calling and the purpose to any life choice.
Heavenly father, forgive me if I have sought (Insert decisions) before seeking your face. Lord, I desire to walk with your presence and not ahead of it. On this day, I will be patient enough to ask you for direction and purpose before making any decision. Lord, I desire to have a more intimate relationship with you. I am broken and the only way I will begin to be healed is through you, my creator. Lord, thank you for calling me and for placing a purpose in me even before I was born. I will keep my eyes peeled and my ears open so that I may hear and see you. Thank you for the sacrifice that you made on the cross, because of Jesus Christ my sins have washed away and I am able to walk in freedom. Lord, thank you for reminding me that no matter how I came on this earth, I have been made on purpose for a purpose. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
