One of my all time favorite songs is Oceans by Hillsong Worship; one verse in the song goes like this.
So I will call upon your name
And keep my eyes above the wave,
When oceans rise my soul will rest in your embrace
For I am yours and you are mine
This verse is specifically profound because it emphasizes the importance of focusing on the Lord amidst chaos. As we walk out in our daily lives, let us remember the importance of keeping our heads above the waves, of focusing on Jesus Christ. It is through this focus that we may act like Him and mirror Him. By focusing on the waves, we miss the mark. We may miss what God is trying to do in a situation and the lessons God is trying to teach us.
So this week I challenge you to keep your focus on the Lord and ignore the waves that are around you. This week I challenge you to __________ Anyways, whatever that may mean to you.
Ken M. Keith Paradoxical Commandment include:
People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered.
Love them anyway
If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives
Do good anyway
If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies.
The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow
Do good anyway
Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable
Be honest and frank anyway
The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds.
Think big anyway
People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs
Fight for a few underdogs anyway
What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight
People really need help but may attack you if you do help them
Help people anyway
Give the world the best you have and you’ll get kicked in the teeth
Give the world the best you have anyways
Be The Light
This is not to sound pessimistic or gloomy, but the truth is that you have an enemy. For any good and righteous action that you do, the enemy will send something or someone that will want to deter your gaze away from Jesus. The enemy will want to deter your gaze so that you may stop acting in the ways of the Lord.
Take heed, we are asked to be the light of the world, and that means to illuminate dark places. We must act righteously amid darkness, hatred, anger and push back. We have been called for such a time as this and cannot be deterred by the responses of others. When we fall, we must get back up, when we are disrespected we must respect, when we are hated, we must love.
I know this concept is hard; it was also hard for me to understand. To fight for those that have fought against you, to love when people have hated you; these are supernatural abilities. We cannot _____anyway without the help of the Lord. In order to live, act and speak righteously we must be filled abundantly. We must pour out of an overflow of our heart “ A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart…” Luke 6:45. In order to forgive anyways, do good anyways, love anyways and succeed anyways, we must be equipped with God’s power, otherwise we will dry ourselves up and will not produce good fruits for others to eat.
You may be finding yourself very hurt as you give and give, yet it is never reciprocated, I had the same issue. The issue was never people, but my heart. I was not yet equipped with God’s power, I was not filled, so my good works came from my own flesh and not from the Lord. But what is the issue with this? I forgot that my flesh is weak and that God’s power is made perfect in my weakness.
As I tried to act from an empty well, I was drained, I became weak and bitter. Once I began to dwell in the presence of the Lord, I was given the supernatural ability to keep my head above the waves, act righteously in an unrighteous world, to love in the midst of haters, forgive when I was given no natural reason to do so. I was filled, so my good works did not drain me.
I finally understood that my reward did not come horizontally but vertically.
Do good for the sake of the Lord and not for man. If you seek the heart of man, you will always be disappointed, because men are imperfect, instead seek after God’s heart; He is perfect and will never forsake you.
“ And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men” Colossians 3:23. What is it that God is asking you to do that you have ignored? Is God asking you to forgive someone that you don’t think deserves forgiveness? to love when you have never gotten Love from anyone else? dream big when you have been told that your dreams are meaningless?
Whatever God is asking you to do, do it anyway, do it even when it seems impossible. God will give you the strength to do the impossible when you fix your gaze on Him, He will equip you by filling your well so that you may never run dry, so that you may pour out of the overflow of your heart. The world will hurt you, will spread rumors about you, will disrespect you, but as a child of God, you are asked to brush it of and to ______anyways.
