If you are anything like me, you love making lists, planning and organizing everything in your life. For people like us, New Years is absolutely the best time of year! New Years allows us to start fresh and make resolutions! But if you are also like me, you tend to make new years resolutions that only last about 2 months into the year.
Even if making resolutions hasn’t worked for you in the past, I would advise that you continue to make them. Over the years I have found that the longer I spend on making resolutions the more of them I achieve come the end of the year. It’s all about the two Ps, Prayer and Planning. I find that New Years resolutions don’t work because people just sit and list a bunch of things they would like to get done without reflecting on the previous year and without praying & planning.
This year, try something new. Take the time out this week to reflect on 2016;
what went well?
Did anything gobadly?
All in all, what did you learn?
And what does God want you to take into the New Year and leave in 2016?
After you take the time to reflect on 2016, pray and ask God what He wants you to work on this year. God may give you a whole bunch of things or He may give you a little. In 2016 God wanted me to work on obedience, so that’s what I did. What is God telling you to work on in 2017? Maybe He wants you to be bolder, to act with more grace, start a business or finish school. Take the time to pray and then take even more time to listen. Once you have reflected and prayed, you are ready to plan.
If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Take the time to plan! Be aware that things may not work exactly as planned, but plan anyway. How will you achieve your goals in 2017? Lets say you have a resolution of taking better care of yourself, how will you do this? Will you start exercising, meal planning, taking yourself out, and doing your nails? How will you accomplish your goals? If you plan to double your savings, how will you do this? Are you going to take on an extra job? Will you stop eating out? Plan, plan and plan.
Add God’s Traits To Your Resolutions
Planning your life and career is great, but more importantly it is important to also make resolutions that focus on your spiritual growth. As followers of Christ, we are to become more like Him each and every year. What better way to become like Jesus than to know who He is and what traits He emulated here on earth. Below is a list of some of the characteristics of Jesus. I challenge all of you to write this list down and think about how you can emulate some, if not all of them better in this New Year. How will you be more loving, patient and/or forgiving?
- Compassionate: Matthew 9:36
- Servant: Mark 10:45
- Loving: John 3:16
- Forgiving: Luke 23:34
- Charitable: Mark 12: 30-31
- Prayerful: Mark 1:35
- Wise: Luke 2:52
- Patience: Hebrews 12: 2, 3
- Obedient: Mark 1:12-13
- Humble-: John 6:38
God has a lot of great things for you in 2017. Take the time to pray and listen to Him as you make your new year resolutions. Above all, dare to be more like Jesus Christ this New Year; it will be the best resolution you make.
